Your Suggestions Solicited

To be honest, I haven't eaten at a lot of restaurants in South Pas. I've been to Ai Japanese Restaurant on Mission, as well as Shaker's. I've had coffee at Kaldi, ice cream at Buster's. Dragonfly and Gus's Barbeque are both places I'd like to try soon. Does anyone have any suggestions of places that I really need to check out?

Marielle,

There are still a number of restaurants I have to visit in South Pas before I can speak with authority on the subject, but it does seem like the eateries here tend to be white bread. Within a mile's radius, we have Carrow's, Wild Thyme and Shaker's.

Part of the reason I've hesitated going to Gus's is that I lived in Houston for 13 years and I have yet to taste barbaque anywhere that comes close to the barbaque I've had in Houston. I'm afraid I'll be sorely disappointed.

I forgot, but I have been to Patakan Thai. I thought the food was decent, but you're right--the servings were small.

My friend Steve has been coming up with a business plan for a restaurant in South Pasadena. I don't know exactly what the time frame is, but I do know when it happens it will be amazing.

I HIGHLY recommend going to Firefly. It's a lovely restaurant. Amazing desserts!

Overall, I have to agree with Marielle...there aren't a lot of restaurants in town.

Shakers -- I can't stand.

Wild Thyme -- I only like for breakfasts...I think they're more upscale than Shakers.

Carrows -- canned.

Hi-Life -- BEST burgers in town! And their small-sized fries and onion rings are just massive! Not to mention that they also make killer strawberry milkshakes.

Carmine's -- Luckily it's within walking distance from our apartment. For American-Italian food it's pretty darn good. HUGE portions. If they're serving the lemon ricotta cake for dessert...you HAVE to get it. I love that stuff.

There used to be this amazing little Italian restaurant next to the Rialto called Il Palino -- top-notch. Sadly, they closed.

Thanks, Princessa.

I will have to try Hi-Life. I haven't found many burgers in LA that I've been very impressed with. I probably just don't know where to go.

I've heard that Carmine's is fun on karaoke night; know anything about that?

Ai is horrible. Z-Sushi at Atlantic/Garfield/Huntington (next to In-n-Out) is very very good.

I like Patakan and Yasmeen's and go there regularly. The Bristol Farms counter is not a bad place to get a sandwich, or hit the salad bar.

I agree that Il Palino was a major loss. Caffe La Fornaretta a bit down Mission is very very good and just like being in Italy.

How's supermarket out on Huntington is a bit of a trek but BY FAR the best in the area.

I wasn't very impressed with Ai; it took us at least 30 minutes to get our order. It doesn't take 30 minutes to prepare sushi. We also saw people who ordered after us get their food before us. What are the prices like at Z-Sushi?

If you want to talk about burgers within outside of South Pasadena -- that's a whole other story.

Z-Sushi is quite reasonable. I think 2 people can eat well for ~$30, or maybe 40 if drinking.

They also have a full menu of cooked Japanese dishes like teriyaki & such.

Thanks for the tips, Jill. I've seen the sign in front of Firefly on Thursday nights. It's on the tapas of my list of places to try.
