I'm still figuring out South Pasadena politics. One thing I have learned is that it often involves the Gold Line and/or the 710 freeway. I found this article about a couple who built a basketball court on the lot next to their house (which they also own) without a permit, and the city's Planning Commission said they had to build a house on the lot instead (because of how it was zoned) . It turns out that this is a politically sensitive event because the couple are big contributors to several city politicians. Pretty sure that story isn't showing up on the front page of the LA Times Politics section.
