article entertaining, although I'm not sure I understand the
Forget South Pasadena comment. Does South Pasadena have a reputation of being a dangerous place to walk?

In my experience, the "editors" at the Star-News spend a lot of time tweaking any news having to do with South Pasadena. They are blatantly biased against the town, presumably for its stance against the 710 extension, but perhaps for other reasons too.
I've caught them numerous times poking fun at South Pasadena both in hard news and editorial copy, and ham-handedly editing letters to the editor not just for space (as they claim), but to deliberately and completely alter the content and meaning of the letters of South Pasadena residents as well.
ALhtough I agree with what you say, Thor, I think the article was talking about Southern Pasadena, and not South Pas, although they conveniently didn't make that clear.
But to answer the original question, yes and no. South Pas has always been a wlking town, and I'm amazed at how true that still is after decades. However, it has always been dangerous, and still is. I had several friends in elementary school, junior high, and high school who were hit by cars. Some died.
I don't have a car and walk everywhere in this town currently. I find most residents on the ball with pedestrians, and wait not only until you are passed their bumper, but until I step on the curb...very nice. I think this sensibility comes from people who are walkers themselves. I believe it is the passers-through who are the gravest offenders...they're going from east to west just passing through town and use Mission, Fremont, Fair Oaks and Huntington as freeways and not the small twon streets they actually are.
I like the article's suggestion of an intervention, or a pedestrain "critical mass". Wouldn't that be cool... a walk in the streets on Mission from Meridian to Fair Oaks, then down Fair Oaks to Huntington, and up Fremont to the Gold Line area or something. For pedestrian awareness!!
