Have ye a green thumb?

Is there anyone else out there who is a backyard/backporch gardener/farmer? This year we've grown swiss chard, summer squash and corn in what used to be a garden full of mostly succulents. We haven't yet tried the corn--though it looks about ready to eat--but the chard and the squash has been amazing. The squash was much bigger than what is normally sold in the stores. The same goes for the chard. I've never seen such vibrant, naturally waxy chard leaves before. And we're also growing herbs on our balcony: sage, basil and cilantro. Not to mention the roma tomato plants that hopefully will produce before it gets too cold for anything to grow. It looks like we'll get at least one tomato before we start approaching freezing temperatures.

I started growing a couple different lavenders and a sage last summer - the lavender is thriving and smells terrific, but the sage was completely devoured by camoflaged grasshoppers that I didn't have the heart to kill or poison. They were pretty cute tho. Thinking about putting in some honeysuckle next...

I had seven tomato plants this year - five in the ground and two in pots. Around mid July I got a bit lazy and stopped watering them. The ones in the ground limped along, but the plants in pots thrived! It was strange, but wonderful. I had tomatoes from the unwatered potted plants as recently as a few weeks ago. (And I stopped watering them in July, mind you.)

Next year, I'm looking to plant perrenials that don't need water to thrive, though. I've discovered I'm more of a lazy gardener than I thought.
